Days for Girls comes to Yakima!

Originally posted on Our Washington Yakima MissionIf any of you knew me before last month, you’ll know that for the last couple years, I’ve been very involved with a non-profit organization called Days for Girls.  We make re-usable feminine hygiene kits for girls all over the world who miss a week of school every month because they have no access to feminine hygiene products.  DfG was started by an amazing LDS mom here in Washington about 6 years ago.  This is the best humanitarian project I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been doing humanitarian work for 30 years now.  You’ll want to learn more about it.

Tonight we had our first leadership/training meeting here in Yakima.  Toni McBean, pictured on the far right helped get things organized and Stake and Ward Relief Society leaders gathered tonight at the mission home to learn all about the needs of girls all over the world and how we can help.  It was exciting to explain and teach and plan ways we can start teams and chapters in this area.

Our missionaries and members love to serve and help others.  This is going to be so fun!  It was really hard to step away from my DfG life, but I can see now that I’ve just stepped into another place where I’m surrounded by wonderful women who are eager to help.   I’m so happy.  Thanks to everyone in this area who will be participating in the goodness.  Please come when we have events.  Bring your friends and neighbors.  You are going to Love this!

I’m really looking forward to introducing this project to our missionaries.  Each missionary is encouraged to do several hours of service every week.  This will be one way they can help.

Here’s what one of our kits looks like:

I went to get the mission car washed Monday afternoon and the carwash was IN THE PARKING LOT OF JOANN FABRICS!!  I didn’t get the car washed.  I went to look for fabric.  Found flannel on sale 50% off, plus a 20% off your entire purchase.  I filled 2 large shopping carts full and brought it home.  (You may remember what our garage looked like in Orem a few weeks ago.)  When Pres. Lewis saw the growing piles, he said, “Here we go again!”  I promised to give as much out tonight as I could and most of this is now in the homes of women who will wash and cut and sew and be really happy!
