Tomorrow is our 23rd Anniversary

Lewis, John & Ann Engagement

Twenty-three years ago today I looked forward to marrying John Conley Lewis in a just a few hours.  It took us a long time to find each other.  I was 31.  John was 36.  We were excited as the wedding day approached.  We were married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 12, 1990.  It was a glorious Fall day for us, for our families, and for our friends.

I’ve been thinking about all the things I admired about John then, and admire still.  I’ve started a list.  It looks something like this:

he uses perfect grammar
there is a map with a GPS in his brain
he’s a safe driver
he never mis-speaks when in public
he has impeccable design sense
thick curls that resist turning gray
old ladies love him
he goes shopping for clothes every 5-6 years
when he goes shopping, he only buys 1 or 2 things
he’s a spendthrift
he makes people feel good
he loves BBC drama movies
he’s not afraid of getting his hands dirty
he’s the last to leave any party (stays to help clean up)
he reads every bit of information in every museum he visits
if there is a gift of administration, he has it
he loves his siblings
he gives more than he ever takes
he doesn’t count his money
he likes to make beds
he’s a logistical genius
he loves to pray
he keeps calendars straight in his head (I don’t)
he speaks fluent German
our kids love him best
he gets after things that need attention
he waited to find me all the years I was in another place far away
