Today I attended the funeral of Stan Benfell, brother of one of my dearest BYU friends. Becky Benfell and I lived in May Hall our freshman year at BYU. She now lives across the country. Her brother, Stan (a wonderful man) was killed after being hit by a car while he was out biking. He taught at BYU and was Director of BYU’s David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.
Maryan Myres Shumway married into Becky’s family. The three of us lived together in Israel January to June 1979, then we were roommates our last year at BYU. We graduated together in 1984. I love these women. I love that our friendship endures and will continue into the eternities.
Below is an idea I had a few years ago. Whenever I attend a funeral, I like to photograph the displays of that person’s life. There is usually a lot of thought put into showing a representation of a family member’s life. After the funeral, all of the gathered photos and personal items are taken down, divided and dispersed among family members.
I like to photograph these displays and post the photos in that person’s FamilySearch Memories so they will not be lost. It only takes a few minutes and the memories will last forever. You can do the same. If you need help posting the photos, call me.
Here are just a few of the photos I took today:
