Finishing a Masterpiece! My Whig Rose Quilt

Inch by inch, stitch by stitch, it’s all come together.  Today is the day I’ve finally finished my Whig Rose quilt top!  I finished the 9 blocks 10 years ago, then worked on the border, putting it away when we served our missions.  All I had to finish were the corners, and today I did those while we were up at the cabin for our book club retreat.

My friend and fellow quilter, Penny Stephenson, found a small black and white photo of an old antique quilt like this, and from that picture, she drafted the pattern.  It’s hand appliqued–I used cereal box cardboard to make templates and turned the edges with spray starch to prepare the pieces for applique.  It wasn’t difficult, the pattern pieces repeat often.  This is my favorite technique for this type of quilt–I can prep 100s of leaves in a sitting.  The applique went with me for many months as I stitched, inch by inch.

Here’s a look at the back:

Here’s the fabric I picked for the back.  It’s off being quilted now by Penny.  I’m pleased with how this beautiful quilt has turned out!

Where can I buy this pattern ? So beautiful

    • I’m sorry I just saw your question. This pattern was drafted from a small black and white photo of an antique quilt–so there is no printed pattern that I know of. There are similar Whig Rose patterns out there. The pattern is fairly simple to draw, if you’re up to it. The shapes repeat and the blocks are all the same. Sorry this isn’t an easy answer.

I am totally in awe of your applique abilities. I piece and EPP but applique scares me to death. I’m not sure why. I hope you have many wonderful hours curled up under the finished quilt. Congratulations.

Such a wonderful feast for the eyes! All your work has definitely been worth it. I love that you showed the back of your appliqué ! It looks very much as mine does. You have given me inspiration to finish my Whig Rose! I have completed the 9 centre blocks but stalled trying to decide on a border.

What a beautiful quilt. Thanks for sharing your masterpiece with us. I have always wanted to make one but haven’t figured out how to start. I have read some history about the blocks from Barbara Brackman. The history was fascinating and I will have to start one soon. thanks for inspiring me. Lorri Bashein Kaysville Utah
